Helping others is at the heart of what we do here at Vertex. Whether it’s developing transformative medicines to help those with serious diseases or employees contributing more than 4,000 volunteer hours during our annual Day of Service, Vertex is committed to giving back to the communities in which we live and work.
So today, in recognition of Giving Tuesday, I would like to highlight the year-round program that gives Vertex employees a chance to double their charitable giving impact: the Matching Gift program.
Overseen by the Vertex Foundation, the Matching Gift program matches employees’ donations to eligible nonprofits dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000 annually per employee. The program aims to give Vertexians an avenue to donate to their favorite charities while also reinforcing the Vertex Foundation’s commitment to long-term giving. While Giving Tuesday generally kicks off the charitable season and end-of-year giving for most people, the Matching Gift program is available throughout the year for all of our regular full-time and part-time employees globally.
Did You Know?
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good. It has since become a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity.

Since launching in November 2017, the success of the Matching Gift program is tangible evidence of the passion among our incredible team for giving to causes they care deeply about. The Vertex Foundation and Vertex employees have made nearly 8,000 unique donations totaling $4 million to more than 1,900 nonprofit organizations in just two years’ time. To-date in 2019 alone, employees have made more than 3,500 donations, which represents a 73% increase over the same time period last year.
While the numbers go a long way in demonstrating the program’s support of nonprofits around the world, the most important piece of the Matching Gift program is the impact it allows our colleagues to make. Personally, I am grateful for the opportunity to double my contributions to two organizations that are meaningful to me, Georgetown (my alma mater) and Discovering Justice. Discovering Justice’s mission is to prepare young people to value the justice system, realize the power of their own voices, and embrace civic responsibility by connecting classrooms and courtrooms. Here are just a few more stories from Vertexians on why they give.
Grace Chen, a Molecular and Cell Biology Research Scientist, has used Matching Gift to increase donations for a nonprofit that is important to her: Camp Casco. Grace is heavily involved with the organization, including writing grants and serving as a Board member and camp counselor. She is grateful that Matching Gift has helped provide financial support to a cause that she is passionate about.
Simone Gaines, a Manager in the Office of Business Integrity and Ethics, is another Vertexian who has taken full advantage of what the Matching Gift program has to offer. In 2019, Simone challenged herself to run the Boston Marathon while raising a minimum of $6,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester. With the help of Matching Gift and her fellow Vertexians, Simone was able to raise over $12,000 for the Boys & Girls Club — more than double her original goal. Simone had nothing but good things to say about Matching Gift, stating that, “Having the ability to donate to the charity of my choice really sets Vertex’s giving program apart.”
Lauren Murray, an Internal Communications Senior Specialist, has also made good use of the Matching Gift program since joining Vertex. Lauren has been able to support a wide variety of causes for family, friends and coworkers with her charitable donations through Matching Gift. She recently used the program to double her contribution to a colleague’s abseil benefitting the Royal Marines in the United Kingdom. Lauren is a big proponent of what the program has to offer, saying, “Since the Matching Gift program was introduced to me, I try to ensure that every donation I make is matched. It seems like a no-brainer that each and every person donating to charity should be using this function to double their impact!”
There are many more stories that could be told, and I am extremely proud of the collective impact we are able to make through the Matching Gift program. It embodies the passion and commitment of our employees and represents the kind of company we are. We look forward to continuing to support the causes that our employees care about.
